Financial Assistance and Scholarships


Scholarships for Either Undergraduate or Graduate Students

All Areas: Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) Program
The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program provides undergraduate and graduate students awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. (Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision-related research.) Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

All Areas: Texas Academy of Science
The Texas Academy of Science administers its competitive Student Research Award (pdf) to academy members. Recipients are to present research findings at an annual meeting. Student travel grants (pdf) are also available to help students defray the costs of attending a meeting.

Environmental Areas: Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundations Scholars for Environmental Research Award
The Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation is active in a wide range of issues, but is principally focused on those issues concerning the environment and its relation with public health. One benefit of the foundation is the Teresa Heinz Scholars for Environmental Research Program, that provides project enhancement support for research on emerging environmental issues. Awards contribute to research that may involve public policy to help increase society's understanding of environmental problems and their solutions.

Marine and Environmental Areas: Arthur F. Lobe Scholarship
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi administers this award for students at the university working toward a degree in marine or environmental sciences. This is a highly competitive award that restricts scholarship recipients to a high standard of academic excellence.

Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Scholarships and Assistantships for Graduate Students

All Areas: Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has opportunities for graduate students to work as Teaching Assistants in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Geology, and Mariculture. Teaching Assistants help with laboratory preparations, laboratory excercises, field trip activities and teaching support. Teaching Assistants receive a monthly salary (based on 20 hours/week), medical and dental benefits, and in-state tuition status for non-Texas residents.

Mariculture Program: Mini Research Assistantships
Incoming graduate students in the Mariculture Program may apply for an assistantship to support work on personal or faculty research projects. These research projects may be applied towards the student's research requirement in the Mariculture Program. Four assistantships of $2,000 each may be awarded during the Spring or Fall semesters and are based on 10 hours/week at $12.12/hour for 15 weeks.

Mariculture Program: Graduate Scholarships
Graduate students in the Mariculture Program are eligible to apply for two $1,000 scholarships. Non-Texas residents who receive these scholarships are qualified to receive in-state status for one semester.

Mariculture Program: Graduate Research Assistantships
The Texas A&M University Mariculture Program, the Texas Agricultural Experimental Station (TAES) Shrimp Mariculture Project, The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) Fisheries Aquaculture Marine Laboratory, and Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) Marine Development Center often have research projects through which students may undertake to fufill the Mariculture Program's research requirement. Molluscan Biology: Dr. Harold W. Harry Memorial Award - Houston Conchological Society, Inc.
Dr. Harold W. Harry was a Professor of Malocology at Texas A&M  University for many years. The Houston Conchological Society, Inc. has established the Dr. Harold W. Harry Memorial Award to support graduate research in malacology, at both private and public Texas institutions Annual stipends are awarded to a full-time graduate student studying molluscan phylogeny, ecology, physiology, etc. The recipient may use these monies to help defray travel and research expenditures.
