Biomedical Sciences Core Requirements
The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree requires a minimum of 123 semester hours.
General University Requirements—48 Semester Credit Hours (SCH)
Undergraduate students in the Biology Program take a set of General University Requirements. Students may need to take additional hours to meet university requirements such as First-Year Seminar courses. Transfer students must also meet these requirements unless they have completed a core curriculum of 42 or more semester credit hours at another regionally accredited public institution of higher education in Texas.

Important Note: Laboratory Safety Seminar (SMTE 0091) is a co-requisite course for all courses in the Department of Life Sciences that have a laboratory component.

Biomedical Sciences Career Option Courses—49 Semester Credit Hours (SCH)
Which courses a student will take for the remaining 49 Semester Credit Hours (SCH) depends on the student’s career goals. A student should select one of these three options after completion of a minimum of 35 semester hours of university course work, but before the completion of 50 semester hours:
- Forensic Science Option for the student who plans a career that will use scientific methods and techniques in law enforcement or other legal investigations. This option provides the science student with basic background in criminal justice and rules of evidence.
- Pre-Clinical Laboratory Science Option for the student interested in clinical laboratory science (formerly called medical technology) including obtaining national CLS certification. Clinical laboratory scientists work and consult with physicians and others to gather, analyze, and interpret clinical laboratory data. (Professional certification as a clinical laboratory scientist requires additional post-baccalaureate hours of course work.)
- Pre-Professional Option for the student who plans to continue his or her education in a professional school to become a chiropractor, dentist, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, podiatrist, physical therapist, physician, physician assistant, or veterinarian.
