Bachelor of Science in Biology:
General Biology Track

This track is designed to provide students with broad-based knowledge in all major areas of biology:

– animal biology/zoology
– cell biology
– ecology/environmental biology
– evolutionary biology
– genetics
– microbiology
– organismal structure and function
– plant biology/botany
– sub-cellular biology

Examples of careers available to students choosing this track are:

  • health care professions
  • college and university teaching
  • scientific writing
  • science law
  • science advising and consulting
  • biological sales

To earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology (in any career track), students must complete both the…

In addition, students will complete at least 45 semester credit hours of course work in the General Biology Track. Thirty-one semester credit hours are required general biology core courses; the other fourteen hours are general biology electives. A student (in consultation with his or her Faculty Mentor and Academic Advisor) selects appropriate electives to personalize the Blank General Biology Track Degree Plan. The current Undergraduate Catalog contains a description of the Biology Program and a list of Biology Course Descriptions.

Important Note: Laboratory Safety Seminar (SMTE 0091) is a co-requisite course for all courses in the Department of Life Sciences that have a laboratory component.

General Biology Core Courses (31 SCH):

Course # Course Title SCH
BIOL 2371 Principles of Evolution 3
BIOL 2472 Principles of Botany 4
Sub-Cellular Choice (choose at least one) 4
BIOL 3403 Molecular Biology
CHEM 4401 Biochemistry I
BIOL 3410 Cell Biology 4
BIOL 3413 Invertebrate Zoology 4
BIOL 3414 Vertebrate Biology 4
Structure and Function Choice (choose at least one) 4*
BIOL 3425 Functional Anatomy
BIOL 3430 Physiology
BIOL 3455 Plant Form and Function
BIOL 3428 Principles of Ecology 4

*Anatomy and Physiology I-II (BIOL 2401-2402) may substitute for this requirement. The student MUST take both semesters (8 SCH), however. (The other 4 SCH will apply to the student's general biology electives.)

General Biology Electives (choose 14 SCH):

Students may choose any upper-division biology (BIOL) courses for which they have taken the appropriate prerequisites, and that are not being counted as general biology core. (Selected Topics, BIOL 4590, requires the faculty mentor's approval.) In addition, students may count the following:

Course # Course Title SCH
CHEM 4401 Biochemistry I (if not counted as core) 4
CHEM 4402 Biochemistry II 4
PHYS 1401 General Physics I (or University Physics I, PHYS 2425) 4
PHYS 1402 General Physics II (or University Physics II, PHYS 2426) 4
Up to 8 SCH of unlisted electives (with faculty mentor's approval)
