Physiology and Nutrition of Marine Shellfish


Program Activity:

Nutritional physiological and biochemical research on maturation and reproduction, larval development, juvenile and sub-adult shrimp. Development of technology for commercial shrimp farming, including: reproduction of shrimp for the production of new-born shrimp; production of five- to ten- day old postlarval shrimp in the hatchery phase; production of juvenile shrimp using raceways; and production of marketable size shrimp using ponds.


Other Information:

Conducted first research on shellfish in 1957 and first research on shrimp in 1963. Over 180 papers and 275 abstracts published in peer-review journals, books, and proceedings. Supervised over 70 graduate students for advanced degrees. Over 70 contracts and grants totalling more than $10 million.
